Curry Down the House

Curry Down the House

Japanese curry restaurant offers a different, spicier take.

Imagine Japanese food.

You’re starting to picture sushi, maybe teriyaki.

You probably don’t picture curry, a hamburger patty, a sunny-side up egg and spaghetti, but that’s one of the primary dishes of the Curry House, a chain of Japanese restaurants across the Golden State. Two are located in the South Bay, in Torrance and Gardena.

Mushrooms, cheese, panko chicken, rice and curry. Throw it in a tortilla and we could have the next fusion craze.

For the weekend sampling at the Curry House in Gardena, the choice was the large lunch portion of a chicken breast katsu – meat breaded with panko and fried, $13.10 – with cheese added atop for $1.75 more.

The meat, along with a few mushrooms, sat atop a bed of white rice which was set above a pool of curry sauce.

A small salad also comes with the lunch meal. Tasty greens.

The fried chicken patty wasn’t too greasy or oily, and it had a nice crunch. The mild curry sauce added a nice kick, but it was probably a bit too mild – a return would probably give the medium or hot flavors a try.

Glancing again at the menu – which also offers a variety of appetizers, soups, meats, omelets and desserts – an oddball item that stood out was tofu cheesecake, $4.25.

Tofu makes for an odd texture, but this cheesecake still tastes good.

The crust had a tasty chalky texture and the accompanying sauces added a sweet flavor to the cheesecake.

While I’d recommend curries from other places such as Big Wok and a number of Indian restaurants, Curry House is worth a try, if not for the different take on Japanese cuisine.

With the exception of some soups and lunch portion chicken or vegetable curry dishes, expect to pay over $10 for most dishes, especially after the dinner prices kick in at 4 p.m.

Curry House’s locations in the South Bay are 21215 Hawthorne Blvd. in Torrance and 1425 W. Artesia Blvd. in Gardena. The Gardena location was selected for this article. Phone: (310) 323-7017. Website:; discounts and other offers are available. Continue reading “Curry Down the House”
